This is a production still from Becky Drysdale’s “It Gets Better” video shoot. I feel very strongly about the “It Gets Better” project and it was super fun to see the making of this video.
Becky is raising money to fund this video on her kickstarter page, which in turn will go on to help raise awareness of teen homophobia, which in turn will help save lives. So I figured I’d help promote the project here. The photos on her kickstarter page are ones that I took from the video shoot.
Honestly, I think this video is going to kick ass all over the internet.
Will Hines is very funny in this “Classified” episode of Get a Job Erika.
Myanmar democracy heroine Aung San Suu Kyi gained her freedom Saturday for the first time in 7 1/2 years, as jubilant supporters stormed the lakeside compound that was her home and prison minutes after the country’s military rulers authorized her release.
After the national police chief read Suu Kyi the official order, several thousand supporters at her residence began singing the national anthem when the Nobel Peace Prize laureate poked her head over the gate.
A smiling Suu Kyi, wearing a traditional jacket and a flower in her hair, spent almost 10 minutes asking the cheering crowd to quiet down before speaking briefly. She asked listeners to spread her words to those standing in the back who couldn’t hear.
“If we work in unity, we will achieve our goal. We have a lot of things to do,” Suu Kyi told well-wishers, who quickly swelled to as many as 5,000. She said she would see them again Sunday at the headquarters of her political party.
While her release elated many, from ordinary Myanmar citizens to world leaders, some warned her struggle was far from over.
Amnesty International estimates more than 2,200 political prisoners remain jailed by the junta.
“While Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s release is certainly welcome, it only marks the end of an unfair sentence that was illegally extended, and is by no means a concession on the part of the authorities,” said Amnesty’s Secretary-General Salil Shetty.
“The fact remains that authorities should never have arrested her or the many other prisoners of conscience in Burma in the first place, locking them out of the political process.”

I love Jon and Stephen and haven’t missed an episode of either show since they respectively began. They are both incredible media watchdogs and are the only ones out there really calling TV journalists on their bullshit. I think the media cry that the Rally took young people away from phone banks is pretty dumb. A bunch of people getting together and having an awesome time for a few hours doesn’t prevent them from volunteering the rest of the day or the rest of the year.
But when it comes to the message of “sanity”… I have to say, I agree with Bill.
Why do you hate America?!
It’s depressing that Obama, or anyone else really, hasn’t challenged the Republican orthodoxy that it’s always best to cut taxes and spending, regardless of circumstance. We can have intelligent arguments about specific macroeconomic models, and come up with different conclusions about what to do, but if your answer is always the same, you’re not taking this stuff seriously.
“Cut spending to create jobs” is a phrase that drives me nuts. If you listen to the news, it seems like the government spends money by throwing it into a fire. The truth is that when anybody, including the government, spends a dollar, that dollar becomes income for somebody else. Government spending represents the income of government employees or private contractors. A cut in spending will lead to layoffs, directly or indirectly.
When unemployment is low, those laid off workers can find other jobs. And this reduces competition between government and private business for workers. So a cut in spending is a good move sometimes.
But right now unemployment is high. The private sector doesn’t have jobs for all the people already looking for work. So a cut in spending will simply add more unemployed people to the pool.
On the bright side, for all their talk, Republicans have never actually reduced spending in a significant way. But they certainly won’t try to increase it in any useful way.
Somebody needs to frame spending as investment. The basic rule of investment: buy low, sell high. Right now, everything is low. Interest rates are low, meaning it is cheap to borrow money. Employment is low, meaning it is cheap to hire people. This is the perfect time for projects that will do economic good in the long term, like a new tunnel under the Hudson River. If the government pays for it now, it will reap the benefit in taxes collected from the people and businesses that will benefit from the tunnel.
Unfortunately, New Jersey has an orthodox Republican governor.
A large coalition of right-wing leaders have signed on to a letter addressed to Mitch McConnell, John Boehner and Haley Barbour calling on the GOP to focus on a core set of principles.
Of the four points they outline, the first is to reduce spending and the fourth is to “rebuild” our nation’s military.
So, the problem with this is that we already spend more on defense than anything else. If you’re going to have only four bullet points, two of them probably shouldn’t directly contradict each other.
Unless of course you don’t mind contradicting yourself because you’re more interested in using empty buzzwords in your bullet points, such as “reduce spending” and “rebuild military,” than saying something of actual substance.
