Yesterday while purchasing Rebecca to read for my improv team’s book club, the cashier at Borders asked me if I was a Borders Rewards Member. I said maybe but I wasn’t sure. He offered to look it up in the system, asking for my phone number. I provided my phone number. I was not found in the system. He then asked if I would like to become a Borders Rewards Member. I asked what it entailed. He said it was free and I only had to provide an email address. I did this and left. On my way out I realized that if I did not need to provide a phone number to become a Rewards Member, then searching for a record of my membership with only my phone number would not be a very fruitful search. Was there a flaw in the system? Or did that cashier have something against me? Perhaps he transcribed my number into my membership profile? Not likely. Something didn’t feel right…
If Rebecca is half as intriguing and thrilling as this checkout experience, well then boy-howdy, our book club sure is in for a treat!
