105 million registered Twitter users. Wow. At my place of employment I will occasionally have people who have heard of Twitter but aren’t exactly sure what it is ask me to explain it to them. I’ve vacillated between a few different phrasings (I abandoned “micoblogging” after realizing that “blogging” itself was often as equally an opaque of a subject), but lately I’ve settled on “the sharing of very short, real-time status updates.” The last time I described it this way, the conversation went something like this:

"Now, I’ve heard of Twitter. Could you explain it to me?"

"Sure! Twitter is basically a social networking tool that allows people to share real time status updates with each other."

"Status updates? What’s an example?"

"Uh, like, ‘I just ate a cheeseburger.’"

(incredulously) “And it interests you to know when your friends are eating cheeseburgers?”

(smiling sheepishly) “I find the whole thing fascinating, actually.”

Only describing it as “status updates” misses the mark though, doesn’t it? I’d say that at least half of the tweets passing through my feed aren’t status updates as such but more likely links of potential interest, funny quips/amusing observations, or promotion/advertising of some sort.

How would you describe Twitter to someone unfamiliar with it?

i think george is on to something…

georgeolken:

The better video is this one. I already wrote a little bit of a parody to this song the other day relevant to Nate’s new consumption of media habits:  Tell me what you know about memes, memes/Tell me what you know about “David After Dentist”/You don’t really know about the trends of tomorrow… That’s all I could think of, but I didn’t try very hard.

vianatedern: considering writing a parody.

Here’s what’s happening: been suffering a spike in seasonal allergy symptoms lately and also have been watching the Kid Cudi music video for the song “Pursuit of Happiness” on heavy rotation. So naturally I’m considering writing a parody of the song and making all of the lyrics about allergies. I need someone to talk me out of this, otherwise it is going to happen.

ps - full disclosure: song is already written, i’m just trying to decide if I should record it

pps - fuller disclosure: already recorded the song in garageband earlier today, i’m just waiting to see if i come to my senses before i actual record the video, too.

ppps - fullest disclosure: things have already been set in motion, there’s nothing you can do to stop me.
